George Petitjean  

                        Married by: Rev. Lewis Green - 25 November 1859

The Episcopal Society of St. James Church, Great Barrington (Rev. Sturgis Gilbert) erected a chapel at Van Deusenville in 1829 to accommodate Episcopalians who lived in the northern part of town.  In 1839, a separate Church, The Trinity Church, was organized, and Rev. Lewis Green was rector there from 1849 to about 1861.

Laura Petitjean

BIRTH: 10 Sept 1860, Sandisfield, MA

BIOGRAPHY:  

        At the time of the 1870 Census, Laura was 9 years old and living with her parents, George (34) and Lucy (30) Littlejohn, her younger sister Rosa (8), and younger brothers Charles (7), Octave (6), and George (1).  All of the children (except George) were born in MA and were attending school.  George was born in CT.  Father, George, was a charcoal burner; Mother, Lucy, could not read or write.  They lived in Goshen, Litchfield County, CT (Series: M593; Roll: 105; Page: 109).

        At the time of the 1880 Census Laura was not living with her parents and siblings at 4 Meadow Lane, Waterbury, CT.  She was a servant in the home of Joel Brigham (52), clergyman, his wife, Susan M. (45), and their son, Howard C. (17), at 200 South Main Street, Waterbury, New Haven County, CT (Series: T9; Roll: 103; Page: 197; District: 42). She was 19 years old.

        At the time of the 1910 Census, Laura was 44 years old, and a servant in the home of a widow, Cornelia M. Benedict (87), and her daughter, Amelia (63), at 135 Prospect Street, Waterbury, New Haven County, CT (2-WD - Series: T624; Roll: 140;  Page: 37; District: 470). The other servant working in the home, Margaret Ryan (24), was born in Ireland, and had arrived in the United States in 1905.

        At the time of the 1920 Census, Laura was listed as a servant, in the home of Donald S. Tuttle (29), his wife Rachel D. (27), and their son, Donald S. Jr. (17), at 4 Rockwell Avenue, Naugatuck, New Haven County, CT (
3-WD - Series: T625; Roll: 190; Page: 221; District: 303
). She was listed as being 57, but was probably really 59.  The other servant working in the home, Endora Bogt (47), was born in Denmark, and had arrived in the United States in 1880.

        In the Waterbury, Naugatuck, and Watertown, Connecticut City Directory, 1932, Laura was listed as renting at 34 Prospect Street, Waterbury, CT. She was also employed at that address, by Louise K. Rodman, the widow of Dr. Charles S. Rodman. 

        Laura lived with her sister, Rose Beck, when she was dying of cancer in the mid 1930's.

BURIAL: Laura is buried with her parents, George (d 15 Apr 1894) and Lucille Parret Petitjean (d 5 Mar 1890), in the Riverside Cemetery in Waterbury, CT.  The family plot also includes her brother, Octave (d 26 Nov 1920), his wife Jennie Terrell Petitjean (d 18 Jul 1933) and their granddaughter, Betty Petitjean McHugh (d 8 Dec 1985).

 

Rose Petitjean

          BIRTH: 17 Aug 1861, Otis, MA

BIOGRAPHY: 

        At the time of the 1870 Census, Rose was listed as Rosa, 8 years old, and living with her parents George (34) and Lucy (30) Littlejohn, her older sister, Laura (9), and her younger brothers Charles (7), Octave (6), and George (1). All of the children (except George) were born in MA and were attending school. George was born in CT.  Father, George, was a charcoal burner; Mother, Lucy, could not read or write.  They lived in Goshen, Litchfield County, CT (Series: M593; Roll: 105; Page: 109).

        Rose married Charles Bogaert, at the age of 17, had a baby, Charles, at 18, and was widowed at 19.  Rose and her son, Charles Bogaert (2), were living with her parents and her siblings (except Charles and Laura) at the time of the 1880 census. They lived at 4 Meadow Lane, Waterbury, New Haven County, CT (Series: T9; Roll: 103; Page: 197; District: 42).  Rose was 19 and working in a spoon shop.

        At the time of the 1900 Census, Rose was living with her sister,  Mary Petitjean Kelson (29), head of household; her son, Charles (23), toolmaker; her brother, Emile (24), toolmaker; and Mary's daughter, Edna L. Kelson (5); at 145 South Main Street, Waterbury, New Haven County, CT (4-WD - Series: T623; Roll: 148; Page: 181; District: 433).  Rose was 39 years old, and a laborer in a brass factory.  There were also two lodgers: Charles Buetin, born in Feb 1870, in Germany (arrived 1896), a toolmaker; and John Shugrue, born in May 1870, in CT, a laborer at the brass factory.  

Charles Beck  

        Rose married Charles Beck on 20 Jun 1906.  At the time of the 1910 Census, Rose was 47 (?) years old, and living at 145 South Elm Street, Waterbury, New Haven County, CT (4-WD - Series: T624; Roll: 141; Page: 122; District: 486), with her husband, Charles (39), a foreman at the Brass Factory, and her niece, Edna Kelson (15), daughter of her sister Mary Kelson (Mary was apparently deceased). Charles was born in Canada (parents German) and had arrived in the USA in 1901 (next Census says 1877). Rose and Charles had been married for four years, the second marriage for both.  Rose had given birth to two children, but only one was living (son, Charles Bogaert - married and living elsewhere in Waterbury).  Her daughter, Ruth Beck, b 29 Nov 1908, died as an infant, on 5 May 1909.

        According to the Waterbury, Naugatuck, and Watertown, Connecticut City Directory, 1914, Rose and her husband, Charles J., resided at 14 Coe Street, Waterbury, CT. Charles was employed as a foreman, at the Shoe Hardware Company.

        At the time of the 1920 Census, Rose was listed as being 52 (actually 59) years old, and was married to Charles J. Beck (49) a molder. Also living with her, was her niece, Edna L. Kelson (25), who worked as a milliner in a store. They lived at 14 Coe Street, Waterbury, New Haven County, CT (1-WD - Series: T625; Roll: 194; Page: 259; District: 430).  

        At the time of the 1930 Census, Rose lived with her husband, Charles (58), who worked at a metal shop. They lived at 140 Helton Street, Waterbury, New Haven County, CT (1-WD - Series: T626  Roll: 279  Page: 109 & 110District 209 - pg. 13).  Rose was listed as being 58 years old, but was actually 69.

        In the Waterbury, Naugatuck, and Watertown, Connecticut City Directory, 1932, 1946, and 1948, Rose and Charles were listed as living at 50 Welton Street, Waterbury, CT.  In 1932, Charles worked at 72 Brown Street.

BURIAL: Rose is buried in a family plot, with her husband, Charles  (d 22 Dec 1948); their infant daughter, Ruth Eleanor (d 5 May 1909); her Mother-in-Law, Elizabeth Beck (d 26 Feb 1919); and her brother-in-law, George C. Beck (d 2 Qct 1913); in Riverside Cemetery, Waterbury, CT.

          Charles Petitjean

BIRTH: 8 Oct 1862, Otis, MA

BIOGRAPHY:  

        At the time of the 1870 Census, Charles was 7 years old and living with his parents George (34) and Lucy Littlejohn (30), his older sisters Laura (9) and Rosa (8), and younger brothers, Octave (6), and George (1).  All of the children (except George) were born in MA and were attending school.  George was born in CT.  His Father, George, was a charcoal burner; his mother, Lucy, could not read or write.  They lived in Goshen, Litchfield County, CT (Series: M593; Roll: 105; Page: 109).

        At the time of the 1880 Census, Charles was 19 years old and boarding at 5 Union Street, Waterbury, New Haven, CT (Series: T9; Roll: 103; Page: 147; District: 40). He was single, and an apprentice machinist. His place of birth was listed as Connecticut, and that of his parents as France.

        Charles went to England in about 1888, on an assignment for the Bell Telephone Company.  He ended up staying there after meeting Florence Hatcher. They were married in about 1889.

 

Florence Hatcher

        At the time of England's 1901 Census, the family: Charles (38), Florence (30), Charles (9), William (4), Flora (5), Bessie (3), Laura (1), and a nephew, William Hatcher (17), machine tool maker, were living at 19 Lower Ford Street, Coventry, Warwick County (Holy Trinity; District 23). Charles was an electrical engineer.  They later had three more children: Rosalie (b13 Feb 1902), George (b 30 Mar 1975), and Edna (b 1 Apr 1908).

        Charles and Florence came to visit his family in America in 1934, on the SS Berengeria, staying for about 3 months.  Upon arriving, George enjoyed some celebrity when it was discovered, that despite his forty-eight years in England, he was still an American citizen, traveling on a US passport. Florence was a British subject with a British passport, so they were on separate lines as they processed off the ship. When he returned to England, he had to be granted "permission" because of his American citizenship. Charles had a cancerous growth on his upper thigh during this visit.

        For most of their later years, Charles and Florence's address in England was 102 Rosebery Avenue, London.

DEATH: Charles died at 102 Rosebery Avenue, London, England, on 21 Jan 1936.

 

Octave Petitjean

BIRTH: 14 April 1864, Richmond, MA

BIOGRAPHY:  

        At the time of the 1870 Census, Octave was 6 years old, and living with his parents, George (34) and Lucy Littlejohn (30), his older sisters Laura (9) and Rosa (8), older brother Charles (7), and younger brother George (1).  All of the children (except George) were born in MA and were attending school.  George was born in CT.  Father, George, is a charcoal burner; Mother, Lucy, could not read or write.  They lived in Goshen, Litchfield County, CT (Series: M593; Roll: 105; Page: 109).

        At the time of the 1880 Census, Octave was living with his parents and siblings (except for Charles and Laura) and a nephew, Charles Bogaert, at 4 Meadow Lane, Waterbury, New Haven County, CT (Series: T9; Roll: 103; Page: 197; District: 42).  Octave was 16 years old, and working in a ring shop.

        Octave married Jennie Lucina Terrell on 6 Jun 1888.  He was listed in the Waterbury, Connecticut Directories for 1889 and 1890 as a machinist, employed by the Tucker Manufacturing Company, and living at 145 Grove Street, Waterbury, CT.  In the 1891 edition of the same directory, he was still employed as a machinist at the same company, but had moved to 375 Grove Street, Waterbury, CT.

        At the time of the 1900 Census, Octave was 36, a toolmaker, and living at 143 Waterville Street, Waterbury, New Haven County, CT (3-WD - Series: T623; Roll: 148; Page: 95; District: 426), with his wife, Jennie (33), his daughters: Mabel T. (11), and Hazel J. (5); his son, Clifford O. (9); and his Mother-in-Law, Elizabeth Terrell (65), a widow. Two of Elizabeth's four children were still living. 

        Octave visited London in 1907, traveling back on the ship Baltic out of Liverpool, England, UK, arriving on 30 Aug 1907.  

        At the time of the 1910 Census, Octave was 46 years old, a foreman at the Brass Company, and living at 143 Waterville Street, Waterbury, New Haven County, CT (3-WD - Series: T624; Roll: 141; Page: 132; District: 481), with his wife, Jennie (43), his daughters: Mabel T. (21), a teacher of shorthand, and Hazel J. (15); his son, Clifford O. (19), a draftsman; his Mother-in-Law, Elizabeth Terrell (76), a widow, who had been born in MA (4 children, 3 living); and his nephew, Charles Petitjean (18), a machinist, who had been born in England.

        In the Waterbury, Naugatuck, and Watertown, Connecticut City Directory, 1914, Octave was listed as living at 143 Waterville Street, Waterbury, CT. He was a foreman at the Berbecker & Roland Manufacturing Company. Also living with Octave and his wife, Jennie, was their daughter, Mabel T., a teacher at the Waterbury Business College.

        At the time of the 1920 Census, Octave was living with his wife, Jennie (52), and daughter Hazel (25), a clerical worker at the brass factory, at 143 Waterville Street, Waterbury, New Haven County, CT (3-WD - Series: T625; Roll: 195; Page: 36; District: 452).  He was 55 years old, and a foreman of nail machines at the brass factory.  His son, Clifford, was married (to Leola Teller) and living elsewhere in Waterbury. His daughter, Mabel, was married (to George Moeller) and living elsewhere in Waterbury.

DEATH: Octave died on 26 Nov 1920, in Waterbury CT.

Lenis Petitjean

         BIRTH: 1866 in Sheffield, MA

         DEATH: Lenis died as an infant, on 19 Sept 1866, in Sheffield, MA.

         BIRTH: 19 Oct 1868, Goshen, CT

         BIOGRAPHY:  

        At the time of the 1870 Census, George was 1 year old and living with his parents, George (34) and Lucy Littlejohn (30),  his older sisters, Laura (9) and Rosa (8), and older brothers, Charles (7) and Octave (6).  All of the children (except George) were born in MA and were attending school.  His Father, George, was a charcoal burner; his Mother, Lucy, could not read or write.  They lived in Goshen, Litchfield County, CT (Series: M593; Roll: 105; Page: 109).

        At the time of the 1880 Census, George was 12 years old, living with his parents and siblings (except for Charles and Laura) at 4 Meadow Lane, Waterbury, New Haven County, CT (Series: T9; Roll: 103; Page: 197; District: 42), and working in a spoon shop.

                    George married Lottie Lelia Durand on December 25, 1889.

        In the Waterbury, Connecticut Directory for the years 1890 and 1891, George was listed as George Petitjean Jr., employed by the Tucker Manufacturing Company.  In 1890, he was boarding at 63 South Main Street, and in 1891 he was boarding at 89 South Main Street, Waterbury, CT.  

        At the time of the 1900 Census, George was 31 years old, a toolmaker, and living at 1024 West Main Street, Waterbury, New Haven County, CT (3-WD - Series: T623; Roll: 148; Page: 102; District: 429), with his wife, Lottie (31), and his son, Percy (9).  

        At the time of the 1910 Census, George (41), a machinist at the Brass Factory, was living in Waterbury, New Haven County, CT (1-WD - Series: T624; Roll: 140; Page: 52; District: 464 - image is illegible), with his wife, Lottie (42), son Percy (19), a toolmaker, and daughter-in-law Mabel (20). Their street address is illegible.

        In the Waterbury, Naugatuck, and Watertown, Connecticut City Directory, 1914, George was listed as living at 31 Walnut Street, Waterbury, CT.  He was employed as a foreman at the Bristol Company.  Also living with George and his wife, Lottie, was their son Percy D., who was employed by the Scovill Manufacturing Company.

        George and his wife, Lottie, raised their granddaughter, Muriel, who was the daughter of their son Percy D. and his first wife Mabel Alinuo.  At the time of the 1920 Census, George was 51 years old, Lottie was 51 years old, and Muriel was 9 years old. They lived at 201 Fair Lawn Avenue, Waterbury, New Haven County, CT (5-WD - Series: T625; Roll: 195; Page: 257; District: 475). George was a foreman at the Bristol Company.  Muriel's parents, Percy and Mabel, lived at 198 Maple Street, Waterbury, New Haven County, CT (1-WD - Series: T625; Roll: 190; Page: 171; District: 300), with their other two daughters, M. Doris (7 years and 6 months), and M. Eleanor (4 years and 3 months).

        At the time of the 1930 Census, George was 61 years old, and living with wife, Lottie L. (61) and granddaughter Muriel (19), at the same address (5-WD - Series: T626; Roll: 280; Page: 242; District: 265).  He was a foreman at the brass factory.  At this time, Muriel's Father, Percy D. (39) was living at 132 Norfolk Avenue, Pawtucket, Providence County, Rhode Island (2-WD - Series: T626; Roll: 2174; Page: 173; District: 249), with his second wife, Sadie E. (35), his daughter Doris M. (17), and his step-daughter, Harriet E. Devarney (13).  Muriel's other sister, Eleanor, was living with her Mother, Mabel,  and step-father, Arthur Whitehead, at 33 Edin Street, Waterbury, New Haven County, CT (4-WD - Series: T626; Roll: 280; Page: 39; District: 255).

        In the Waterbury, Naugatuck, and Watertown, Connecticut City Directory, 1932, George and Lottie were listed as living at 201 Fairlawn Avenue, Waterbury, CT.

DEATH: George died on 11 Jun 1945, in Waterbury, CT. 

BURIAL: George is buried with his wife, Lottie Petitjean (d 9 Nov 1947), son, Percy D. Petitjean (d 24 Aug 1957), granddaughter, Muriel P. Hennion (d 8 Nov 1995) and Muriel's husband, John Hennion (d 27 Jul 1993), in Pine Grove Cemetery, Waterbury, CT.

            

          Mary Petitjean

          BIRTH: 28 Dec 1871, Goshen, CT

BIOGRAPHY: 

        At the time of the 1880 Census, Mary was living with her parents and siblings (except for Charles and Laura), and a nephew, Charles Bogaert, at 4 Meadow Lane, Waterbury, New Haven County, CT (Series: T9; Roll: 103; Page: 197; District: 42).  She was 7 years old. 

        Mary married Harry R. Kelson on 7 Sept 1892.  He had been born on 23 Mar 1875 and had died some time before 1900.  He was listed in the Waterbury, Connecticut Directory in 1889 as being employed by the West Button Co., and boarding on Watertown Road, Waterbury CT.  In the same directory in 1891, he was with the same company, but boarding at 12 Ann Road, Waterbury, CT.

        At the time of the 1900 Census, Mary was 29 years old, widowed and listed as head of household, at 145 South Main Street, Waterbury, New Haven County, CT (4-WD - Series: T623; Roll: 148; Page: 181; District: 433).  She lived with her daughter, Edna L. Kelson (5), her sister, Rose Bogaert (39), laborer at the brass factory, her nephew, Charles Bogaert (23), toolmaker, and her brother Emile (24), toolmaker. She also had two lodgers: Charles Buetin, b Feb 1870 in Germany (arrived in 1896), a toolmaker; and John Shugrue, b May 1870 in CT, a laborer at the brass factory.

DEATH: Mary died in 1909, in Waterbury, CT.

 

         Emile Frank Petitjean

         BIRTH: 23 Mar 1876, Goshen, CT

         BIOGRAPHY: 

        At the time of the 1880 Census, Emile was living with his parents and siblings (except for Charles and Laura), and a nephew, Charles Bogaert, at 4 Meadow Lane, Waterbury, New Haven County, CT (Series: T9; Roll: 103; Page: 197; District: 42). He was 4 years old.

        At the time of the 1900 Census, Emile was 24 years old, and living at 145 South Main Street, Waterbury, New Haven County, CT (4-WD - Series: T623; Roll: 148; Page: 181; District: 433), with his sister Mary Kelson (29), head of household, his niece, Edna L. Kelson (5), his sister Rose Bogaert (39), laborer at a brass factory, and his nephew, Charles Bogaert (23), toolmaker.  Emile was also a toolmaker.

        Emile married Florence M. Carley in 1900.  At the time of the 1910 Census, Emile was 36 years old, a machinist at the Brass Factory, and living in Waterbury, New Haven County, CT (address illegible) (3-WD - Series: T624; Roll: 141; Page: 108; District: 480), with his wife, Florence (37); his sons: William (9), Raymond (8) and Emile (6); and his daughter, Ruth (1 year, and six months).

        In the Waterbury, Naugatuck, and Watertown, Connecticut City Directory, 1914, Emile was listed as living at 41 Middlesex Street, Waterville, CT.  He was employed by the Berbecker & Roland Manufacturing Company.  When he registered for the draft, on 12 Sep 1918, Emile was 42 years old, and living with his wife, Florence, on Middlesex Street, Waterville, CT. He was employed as a machinist at Chase Metal Works, Waterville, CT.  He was described as being of medium height, and slender build, with black hair and brown eyes.

        At the time of the 1930 Census, Emile was 55 years old, and living with his wife, Florence (47); his son William (29), who works in clock shop; son Raymond (27), a printer at a newspaper; son Emile Jr. (25), lineman for the telephone company; daughter Ruth (21), working in a clock shop; son George (14), and son Clayton (12), at 1045 North Main Street, Waterbury, New Haven County, CT (2-WD - Series: T626; Roll: 279; Page: 125; District: 223).  Emile senior was a machinist.

        In the Waterbury, Naugatuck, and Watertown, Connecticut City Directory, 1932, Emile was listed as being employed by Chase Metal Works, and living at 1045 North Main Street, Waterbury, CT, with his wife, Florence M.,  his sons:  Emile F. Jr., a lineman for the Southern New England Telephone Company; Raymond G., a printer in New Haven, William F., employed by the Waterbury Clock Company; and his daughter, Ruth M., a packer at Swift & Company.  His sons, George E. and Clayton, also living with them, were not yet employed.

DEATH: Emile died on 17 Nov 1951, in Waterbury, CT.

BURIAL: Emile is buried with his wife, Florence (d 18 Dec 1954), in Pine Grove Cemetery, Waterbury, CT.
