        At the time of the 1900 Census, Florence was 17 years old, and living with her Father, Rufus H. Carley(43), a widower and carpenter, and her siblings, Ruby H.(15), Myrtle L.(12), and Rufus H. Jr.(10), in Waterbury, CT. (District 419 - pg. 7).

        Florence married Emile Petitjean in 1900.

        At the time of the 1910 Census, Florence was 37 years old, and living in Waterbury, New Haven County, CT (address illegible) (
3-WD - Series: T624; Roll: 141; Page: 108; District: 480), with her husband, Emile (36), a machinist in the Brass Factory; her sons: William (9), Raymond (8) and Emile (6); and her daughter, Ruth (1 year, and six months). Florence had given birth to 5 children, and 4 of them were still living.

        At the time of the 1930 Census, Florence was 47 years old, and living with her husband, Emile (55); her son William (29), who worked in clock shop; son Raymond (27), a printer at a newspaper; son Emile Jr. (25), lineman for the telephone company; daughter Ruth (21), working in a clock shop; son George (14), and son Clayton (12), at 1045 North Main Street, Waterbury, New Haven County, CT (2-WD - Series: T626; Roll: 279; Page: 125; District: 223). Emile Sr. was a machinist.

        In the Waterbury, Naugatuck, and Watertown, Connecticut City Directory, 1932, Florence was listed as living at 1045 North Main Street, Waterbury, CT, with her husband, Emile F., employed by Chase Metal Works;  her sons:  Emile F. Jr., a lineman for the Southern New England Telephone Company; Raymond G., a printer in New Haven, William F., employed by the Waterbury Clock Company; and her daughter, Ruth M., a packer at Swift & Company.  Her sons, George E. and Clayton, also living with them, were not yet employed.

        Florence was listed as Mrs. in the Waterbury, Naugatuck, and Watertown, Connecticut City Directory, 1948, as living at 1863 East Main Street, Waterbury, CT.  Her husband, Emile, was not listed, but her sons: William F.,  George E., Raymond G., Clayton C., and Emile E. Jr., and his wife Edith were renting there.

DEATH: Florence died on 18 Dec 1954, in Waterbury, CT.

BURIAL: Florence is buried with her husband, Emile, at Pine Grove Cemetery, Waterbury, CT.

        At the time of the 1910 Census, William was 9 years old, and living in Waterbury, New Haven County, CT (address illegible) (3-WD - Series: T624; Roll: 141; Page: 108; District: 480), with his Father, Emile (36), a machinist in the Brass Factory; his Mother, Florence (37); his brothers: Raymond (8) and Emile (6); and his sister, Ruth (1 year, and six months).

        According to the Waterbury, Naugatuck, and Watertown, Connecticut City Directory, 1914, the family was living at 41 Middlesex Street, Waterville, CT.  Emile was employed by the Berbecker & Roland Manufacturing Company.

        At the time of the 1930 Census, William was 29 years old, and living with his Father, Emile (55); Mother, Florence (47); brother, Raymond (27), a printer at a newspaper; brother, Emile Jr. (25), lineman for the telephone company; sister, Ruth (21), working in a clock shop; and brothers, George (14), and Clayton (12). They lived at 1045 North Main Street, Waterbury, New Haven County, CT (2-WD - Series: T626; Roll: 279; Page: 125; District: 223). William worked in a clock shop.

        In the Waterbury, Naugatuck, and Watertown, Connecticut City Directory, 1932, William was listed as being employed by the Waterbury Clock Company, and living at 1045 North Main Street, Waterbury, CT, with his Father, Emile, employed by Chase Metal Works; his Mother, Florence M.,  his brothers:  Emile F. Jr., a lineman for the Southern New England Telephone Company; Raymond G., a printer in New Haven; and his sister, Ruth M., a packer at Swift & Company.  His brothers, George E. and Clayton, also living with them, were not yet employed.

        In the Waterbury, Naugatuck, Watertown Directory, 1948, he was listed as William F. Petitjean, clerk for the United States Time Corporation. He was renting at his parent's home, at 1863 East Main Street, Waterbury, CT. His brother, Emile E. Jr., and his wife Edith, and his brothers, George E., Raymond G., and Clayton C., were also renting there.

        In the Waterbury, Naugatuck, Connecticut City Directory, 1960 and 1964,William is listed as being a rubber worker in Naugatuck, and renting at 23 Knoll Street, Waterbury, CT (his brother, Emile's home).

        He was employed for 20 years by the U.S. Rubber Company, retiring in 1966. 

DEATH: William died on 9 Jul 1974, at the Atlantic City Medical Center, Atlantic City, NJ, while on vacation. His address, at the time of his death, was 430 Frost Road, Waterbury, CT.

BURIAL: William's funeral was held 13 Jul 1974, at the Alderson Funeral Home, Waterbury, CT. He was buried at Pine Grove Cemetery, Waterbury, CT.

 

Raymond G. Petitjean

        Raymond started working in the New Haven Register composing room in 1925, and was immediately given the nickname "Joe Waterbury", by a proofreader.  He started driving his 1928 Packard to work every day from the time he bought it, in 1930, until he retired.  His younger brother, Emile, was his mechanic.  The car was nicknamed "Old Betsy".  

        In the Waterbury, Naugatuck, Connecticut City Directory, 1960 and 1964, Raymond is listed as being a composer in New Haven, and renting at 23 Knoll Street, Waterbury, CT (his brother, Emile's home). 

        In the Waterbury, Naugatuck, Watertown Directory, 1979, he is listed as Raymond G. Petitjean, retired, and living with his brother, Emile, and Emile's wife, Edith, at 430 Frost Road, Waterbury, CT.

DEATH: Raymond died on 6 Jul 1990, in Waterbury, CT.

 

Emile Frank Petitjean Jr.

BIOGRAPHY:

He also ran a gasoline station at 12 Meriden Road, Waterbury, CT.  He and his wife Edith, were renting at his parent's home, at 1863 East Main Street, Waterbury, CT.  His brothers, William F., Raymond G., George E., and Clayton C., were also renting there.

        Emile ran a machine shop and garage in Waterbury, where he kept his car collection: 10 Packards, all vintage eighty-cylinder 1928 vehicles of different models, six of them registered in the Classic Car Club (1962).  He also had a later model Packard, a 10-cylinder 1941 luxury sedan formerly belonging to the Chase family of Waterbury, CT.

         In the Waterbury, Naugatuck, Connecticut City Directory, 1960 and 1964, Emile is listed as running the Meriden Road Service Station (12 Meriden Road), and living at 23 Knoll Street, Waterbury, CT, with his wife, Edith; his son, Emile, gas station attendant; and his brothers, William and Raymond. 

        In the Waterbury, Naugatuck, Watertown Directory, 1979, he was listed as Emile E. Petitjean Jr., running the Meriden Road Texaco Station, 12 Meriden Road, Waterbury, CT.  He lived with his wife, Edith H., and his brother Raymond G. Petitjean at 430 Frost Road, Waterbury, CT.

DEATH: Emile died on 14 Jun 1982, in Waterbury, CT.

 

Ruth Petitjean

BIRTH: 3 Jan 1909, Waterbury, CT 

BIOGRAPHY: 

        At the time of the 1910 Census, Ruth was 1 year, six months old, and living in Waterbury, New Haven County, CT (address illegible) (3-WD - Series: T624; Roll: 141; Page: 108; District: 480), with her Father, Emile (36), a machinist in the Brass Factory; her Mother, Florence (37); her brothers: William (9), Raymond (8), and Emile (6).

        In the Waterbury, Naugatuck, and Watertown, Connecticut City Directory, 1932, Ruth was listed as being a packer at Swift & Company, and living at 1045 North Main Street, Waterbury, CT, with her Father, Emile, employed by Chase Metal Works; her Mother, Florence M.,  her brothers:  William, employed by the Waterbury Clock Company; Raymond, a printer in New Haven; and Emile, a lineman for the Southern New England Telephone Company .  Her brothers, George E. and Clayton, also living with them, were not yet employed. 

        Ruth married Joseph Carl Heintzman on Nov. 30, 1933, in Waterbury.  Ruth and her husband owned Heintzman's Grocery Store for many years. She later worked at Schierer's IGA grocery store in Metamora and Paul's grocery store in Washington, Illinois.  She was of the Episcopalian faith, and lived at 219 W. Monroe Street, Eureka, Illinois.

        Ruth's husband, Joseph, died on 7 Aug 1966. She was also preceded in death by five brothers.

DEATH: At the time of her death, at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, 17 Nov 1999, at the age of 90, Ruth was living at Maple Lawn Homes, in Eureka, Illinois. 

BURIAL: A Scripture service was held at the Mason Funeral Home in Metamora, Illinois. The Rev. Dacian Batt officiated. A memorial service was also held at Maple Lawn Homes. The Rev. Phil Bachman officiated. Ruth was buried at St. Mary's Cemetery in Metamora, IL.

 

George E. Petitjean

        At the time of the 1930 Census, George was 14 years old, and living with his Father, Emile (55); Mother, Florence (47); brother, William (29), working in a clock shop; brother, Raymond (27); printer at a newspaper, Emile Jr. (25), a lineman for the telephone company; sister, Ruth (21), working in a clock shop; and brother Clayton (12). They lived at 1045 North Main Street, Waterbury, New Haven County, CT (2-WD - Series: T626; Roll: 279; Page: 125; District: 223).

        George married Eva Sticklius.

        In the Waterbury, Naugatuck, Connecticut City Directory, 1960 and 1964, George was listed as being a coupler at the Anaconda Metal Hose Division of the American Brass Company, and living with his wife, Eva S. at 37 Lawlor Street, Waterbury, CT.

        In the Waterbury, Naugatuck, Watertown Directory, 1979, George was listed as George E. Petitjean, retired, and living with his wife, Eva S., at 37 Lawlor Street, Waterbury, CT.

DEATH: George died, at the age of 77, on 24 Jan 1993, at Park Manor Convalescent Home, in Waterbury, CT.

BURIAL: George's funeral was held on 27 Jan 1993, at the Buckmiller Brothers Funeral Home, Prospect, CT.

 

Clayton C. Petitjean
