BIOGRAPHY

        At the time of the 1900 Census, William E. (listed as Eddie) was 5 years old, and living at 120 Spring Street, Naugatuck, New Haven County, CT (3-WD - Series: T623; Roll: 144; Page: 223; District: 339), with his Mother, Sarah (31) (b May 1869, NY), widowed; his grandmother, Margaret Terrell (50) (b Feb 1850, Ireland), head of household, widowed; his sisters: Margaret (12) (b Feb 1888, CT); and Nellie (6) (b Dec 1892, CT); his brother, Timothy (9) (b Jun 1890, CT); his aunt, Emma Terrell (23) (b Jun 1876, NY), a shoemaker at the rubber factory; and his uncle, Henry Terrell (23) (b May 1877, CT), a shoemaker at the rubber factory. William and his siblings were listed as being Margaret's children, but they were actually Sarah's. Emma and Henry Terrell were also listed as being Margaret's children, although the census also indicated that Margaret had only had one child. 

        At the time of the 1910 Census, William E. (listed as Edward) was 16 years old, a rubber worker, and living at 551 North Main Street, Naugatuck, New Haven County, CT (3-WD - Series: T624; Roll: 137; Page: 92; District: 603), with his Mother, Sarah (37), head of household; his brother, Timothy (19), a rubber worker; and his sister, Nellie (17), a shoe worker at the rubber shop. 

        At the time of the 1920 Census, W. Edward was 25 years old, a buffer at a brass factory, and living at 120 Spring Street, Naugatuck, New Haven County, CT (3-WD - Series: T625; Roll: 190; Page: 234; District: 303), with his Mother, Sarah (45), head of household; her son, Timothy (30), laborer at the rubber factory; and his sister, Nellie (27), a shoemaker at the rubber factory.

        William married Helen M. Whelan and had two children: Ruth (b 10 Jul 1928) and Joan (b 28 Mar 1934).

        At the time of the 1930 Census, William was 35 years old, an inspector in a rubber factory, and living at 73 Prospect Street, Naugatuck, New Haven County, CT (3-WD - Series: T626; Roll: 274; Page: 142; District: 186), with his wife, Helen (29); his daughter Ruth (1 year, 10 months); his sister-in-law, Marie Smith (27); his brother-in-law, Michael Smith (27), an insurance salesman; and his sister-in-law, Alice Whelan (33), a rubber worker.  All of them had been born in CT.  In the same census, William's Mother, Sarah (59), was living at 27 Frederick Street, Naugatuck, New Haven County, CT (1-WD - Series: T626; Roll: 274; Page: 22; District: 179), working as a servant for the Baxter family: Charles (56), widowed, a newspaper man; Charles Jr. (27), a meter tester for a utility company; William (25), a reporter for a newspaper; and an Aunt, Mary Stewart (77), widowed. 

        The William Hudners moved to Waterbury, and lived at 51 Walnut Street in 1939 (Waterbury, Naugatuck and Watertown City Directory, 1939). In 1948, they lived at 79 Orange Street, Waterbury, New Haven County, CT (Waterbury, Naugatuck, and Watertown, Connecticut City Directory, 1948). William was a foreman at the Chase Brass and Copper Company, Inc.

        William's Mother, Sarah, was a resident of Waterbury, when she died there, on 18 Jul 1955, at the age of 86.

Helen M. Whelan

BIRTH: 23 Oct 1900, Naugatuck CT

BIOGRAPHY

       At the time of the 1920 Census, Helen was 19 years old, a shoemaker at the rubber shop, and living at 449 North Main Street, Naugatuck, CT (3-WD - Series: T625; Roll: 190; Page: 257; District: 305), with her Father, Michael (59), a widower, born in NJ, and her siblings: John (29), who worked in the rubber factory; Thomas (27), a laborer at the rubber factory; Margaret (23), a shoemaker at the rubber factory; Alice (21), a laborer at the box shop; Maria (16), a laborer at the box shop; and Francis (13). Helen and her brothers and sisters were all born in CT.

        Helen married William Hudner and lived in Naugatuck, until at least 1930.  At the time of the 1930 Census, Helen  was 29 years old, and living at 73 Prospect Street, Naugatuck, New Haven County, CT (
3-WD - Series: T626; Roll: 274; Page: 142; District: 186), with her husband, William (35) , an inspector in a rubber factory; her daughter Ruth (1 year, 10 months); her sister Marie Smith (27); her brother-in-law, Michael Smith (27), an insurance salesman; and her sister, Alice Whelan (33), a rubber worker.  All of them had been born in CT.

        The family moved to Waterbury, living at
51 Walnut Street in 1939 (Waterbury, Naugatuck and Watertown City Directory, 1939), and then at 79 Orange Street, Waterbury, New Haven County, CT (Waterbury, Naugatuck, and Watertown, Connecticut City Directory, 1948). William was a foreman at the Chase Brass and Copper Company, Inc.

        For the last 15 years of her life, Helen lived with her daughter, Ruth Petitjean, in West Simsbury, CT.  She had seven grandchildren and one great-grandson.

DEATH: Helen was a resident of West Simsbury, CT, when she died, at the age of 89, on 2 Oct 1990, in Hartford, CT.

BURIAL: Helen's funeral was on 5 Oct 1990, from the Vincent Funeral Home, Simsbury, CT, to a Mass at 9:00 A.M., at St. Mary's Church, Simsbury, CT. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Waterbury, CT.

Ruth Hudner

BIRTH: 1928, Waterbury, CT

BIOGRAPHY

        At the time of the 1930 Census, Ruth was 1 year, and 10 months old, and living at 73 Prospect Street, Naugatuck, New Haven County, CT (3-WD - Series: T626; Roll: 274; Page: 142; District: 186), with her Father, William (35) , an inspector at the rubber factory;  her Mother, Helen  (29); her aunt, Marie Smith (27); her uncle, Michael Smith (27), an insurance salesman; and her aunt, Alice Whelan (33), a rubber worker in a rubber factory.  All of them had been born in CT. 

 

        The family moved to Waterbury, living at 51 Walnut Street in 1939 (Waterbury, Naugatuck and Watertown City Directory, 1939).  Ruth met Robert Petitjean, at a USO dance in Waterbury, CT, in 1943 (Bob  frequently sang with the band).  At that time, he was a participant in the V-12 program at Yale University.  

 

Robert John Petitjean

        Ruth was listed in the Waterbury, Naugatuck, and Watertown, Connecticut City Directory, 1948, as Ruth Hudner, clerk at the Scovill Manufacturing Company, Waterbury, CT, and living at 79 Orange Street, Waterbury, CT. 

        Ruth married Robert Petitjean on 22 May 1948. They lived in West Simsbury, CT, for most of their married life (42 years), and had three daughters: Janet (b. 1953), Barbara (b. 1955), and Nancy (b. 1959). Janet married Wayne Seabury on 30 Jun 1973, and they had one child (Bob and Ruth's only grandchild), Kevin Wayne Robert Seabury (b 1978), before their divorce, on 17 Dec 1981. 

        Bob and Ruth purchased a condo in Naples, FL, where they spent their winters, after they had both retired. Bob died on 3 Apr 1996, in Naples, FL.

 

Joan Hudner

BIRTH: 28 Mar 1934, Waterbury, CT

BIOGRAPHY

        Joan lived at 51 Walnut Street in 1939 (Waterbury, Naugatuck and Watertown City Directory, 1939), with her parents, William and Helen, and her sister, Ruth (b 10 Jul 1928).  In 1948, they lived at 79 Orange Street, Waterbury, New Haven County, CT (Waterbury, Naugatuck, and Watertown, Connecticut City Directory, 1948).

        Joan married Donald E. Dickson, and had four children before their divorce.  She was employed, as a secretary, by Coltec Industries, Chandler Evans Division, in West Hartford, Connecticut.

DEATH: Joan was 66 years old, when she died on 20 Sep 2000, at her home, at 636 Prospect Avenue, Hartford, CT.
