        Thomas married Mary Carbis in 1810, in St. Clement, Truro, Cornwall, England (Pallot's Marriage Index: 1780-1837).  They had seven children: Elizabeth, Catherine Calf, Thomas, Mary, Robert Calf, John Carbis, and Grace..  They had seven children: Elizabeth, Catherine Calf, Thomas, Mary, Robert Calf, John Carbis, and Grace.

        Thomas was a basket maker.

Mary Carbis

BAPTISM: Mary was baptized on 17 Jan 1790, in St. Clement, Truro, Cornwall, England. 

BIOGRAPHY: 

        Mary was the daughter of Abel and Mary Carbis, of Saint Clement, Truro, Cornwall, England.  She married Thomas Penhaligon in 1810, in St. Clement, Truro, Cornwall, England (Pallot's Marriage Index: 1780-1837).  They had seven children: Elizabeth, Catherine Calf, Thomas, Mary, Robert Calf, John Carbis, and Grace..  They had seven children: Elizabeth, Catherine Calf, Thomas, Mary, Robert Calf, John Carbis, and Grace..

Elizabeth Penhaligon

BAPTISM: Elizabeth was baptized on 25 Dec 1810, in St. Clement, Truro, Cornwall, England.

BIOGRAPHY: 

        Elizabeth never married and worked as a domestic servant.  At the time of the 1881 British Census (3 April 1881), Elizabeth Penhaligon was the head of household, living in Kenwyn, Cornwall, England. She was unmarried, age 70, born St. Clement, Cornwall, England.  Her occupation was listed as retired domestic servant.

DEATH: After 1881 (possibly in Dec 1890, in Truro, at the age of 79).

 

Catherine Calf Penhaligon

BIRTH: 1 Jan 1813, St. Clement, Truro, Cornwall, England

NICKNAME: Kitty

BIOGRAPHY: 

        Kitty moved from Cornwall to the Croydon/Norwood part of Surrey, with her sisters, Mary and Grace. The area was packed with Cornish migrants and had been for many years.  In Surrey, the Penhaligon name became Pennaligon.

        Kitty married John Ware, who was also a witness at the marriage of her sister, Grace, to John Coppin, on 4 Oct 1846, at St. John the Baptist Church, Croydon, Surrey.  Kitty and John had two children: Alfred (b 1846, Norwood, Surrey, England), and Thomas Norwood (b 1851, Norwood, Surrey, England). 

        At the time of the 1871 English Census, Catherine was 58 years old, and living at 4 Rose Cottages, Chapel Road, Norwood, London County, England (Source: RG10/693; District: 8; Page: 12), with her husband, John (57), a gardener, and their son, Thomas Norwood (21), a car(t)man. 

        At the time of the 1881 English Census, Catherine (68), was living at 2 Rose Cottages, Chapel Road, Norwood, London County, England (Source: RG11/0628; District: 14; Pages 3 & 4), with her husband, John (67), a gardener. Their son, Alfred Ware (35), a general laborer, was living next door, at 3 Rose Cottages. Also living there were Elizabeth Barwell (38), a lodger; and two children: Alfred W. Barwell (3), listed as son; and Mary Ware (1), listed as daughter. Living at 4 Rose Cottages were John & Kitty's son, Thomas (30), a ground laborer; his wife Sarah (28); and a lodger, Bertha Littlefield (27), a tannery? worker.

DEATH: Kitty died in Jun 1884, in Lambeth, England, at the age of 71.

 

Thomas Penhaligon

BIRTH: 15 Jan 1815, St. Clement, Truro, Cornwall, England

BIOGRAPHY: 

        Thomas married Grace Dunstan on 9 October 1834, in Truro, Cornwall, England.  They had two children: William Henry Dunstan (baptized 2 Aug 1835, St. Gluvius, Cornwall, England), and Thomas Dunstan (b 21 Dec 1837, Bodmin, Cornwall, England).

        Their son, William Henry Dunstan, married Elizabeth Ann George and had seven children: Alice Martin (b 26 Dec 1857; baptized 15 Jan 1858, Bodmin, Cornwall, England), Edith Bickle (baptized 22 May 1859; married Harry Ward Jones), William Henry George (baptized 2 Sep 1860; d Mar 1861; buried 21 Mar 1861, Bodmin, Cornwall, England), John Henry (baptized 8 Apr 1862; d May 1862; buried 15 May 1862, Bodmin, Cornwall, England), Thomas Dunstan (b 28 Feb 1863; baptized 18 Mar 1863; married Mary Rowe, 2 Aug 1886: all in Bodmin, Cornwall, England), Elizabeth George (baptized 16 Sep 1864, Bodmin, Cornwall, England), and Annie Louisa (baptized 15 Dec 1870, d Mar 1871; buried 10 Mar 1871, Bodmin, Cornwall, England).

        Their son, Thomas Dunstan, married Louisa Hosking, daughter of John and Susan Hosking, on 30 Jul 1865 in Bodmin, Cornwall, England.  At the time of the 1871 English Census, Thomas was 34 years old (b Bodmin, Cornwall, England), head of household, a carpenter (out of work), and living on (?) Bridge Street, St. Clement, Truro, Cornwall, England (Source: RG10/2280; District: 6; Page:31), with his wife, Louisa (32) (b St. Hilary, Cornwall, England). 

        Grace continued to live in Bodmin after her husband's death in 1865.  At the time of the 1881 English Census, Grace was 61 years old (b Truro, Cornwall, England), widowed, head of household, a carrier, and living in Bodmin, Cornwall, England (Source: RG11/2292; District: 7; Page: 15), with her granddaughter, Alice Martin Penhaligon (23) (daughter of her son, William Henry Dunstan Penhaligan), a dressmaker.  In the same census, her son, William Henry Dunstan was 44 years old (b Penryn, Cornwall, England), a carrier, and living on Higher Bore Street, Bodmin, Cornwall, England (Source: RG11/2292; District: 7; Page: 16), with his wife, Elizabeth A. (41) (b Bodmin, Cornwall, England); his daughter, Edith (21) (b Bodmin, Cornwall, England), a dressmaker; his son, Thomas (18) (b Bodmin, Cornwall, England), who assisted his father; his daughter, Elizabeth G.         At the time of the 1891 English Census (5 April 1891), Grace was 74 years old, widowed, head of household, and living at 31 Higher Bore Street, Bodmin, Cornwall, England (Source: RG12/1816; District: 7; Page: 7), occupying two rooms.  She was listed as having been born in Penryn, Cornwall.  In the same census, her son, William Henry Dunstan,  was 54 years old, head of household, railway carrier (neither employer nor employed), and living at 33 Higher Bore Street, Bodmin, Cornwall, England (Source: RG12/1816; District: 7; Pages: 7 & 8).  He was listed as having been born in Bodmin, Cornwall.  Included in the household were his wife, Elizabeth Ann George (51); his son, Thomas Penhaligon (28), widowed, a railway carrier; his grandchildren: Alice (4), and William (3); and his father-in-law, William George (83), also a railway carrier.  Also in the same census, Grace's son, Thomas Dunstan was 49 years old, head of household, a carpenter, and living on Albert Street, in Camborne, Cornwall, England (Source: RG12/1850; District: 6; Page: 30), with his wife, Louisa (44).

        Grace died in Dec 1891, and was buried, in Bodmin, Cornwall, England, on 3 Jan 1892.  After her death, her son, William, continued to live in Bodmin.  At the time of the 1901 British Census, he was 64 years old, a carrier at the G. W. Railway (employer), and living at 61 Higher Bore Street, Bodmin, Cornwall, England (Source: RG13/2201; District: 6; Page: 9), with his wife, Elizabeth A. (61); his son, Thomas D. (38), widowed, and a carrier at the G. W. Railway (worker); his granddaughter, Alice M. M. Penhaligon (14); and his grandson, Sidney R. Rowe (?) (11).

Mary Penhaligon

BIRTH: 4 Jan 1818, St. Clement, Truro, Cornwall, England

BIOGRAPHY: 

        Mary and her sisters, Kitty and Grace, moved from Cornwall to the Croydon/Norwood part of Surrey.  The area was packed with Cornish migrants and had been for many years.  In Surrey, the Penhaligon name became Pennaligon.

        In about 1836, Mary Pennaligon married John Meager, a native of Croydon, but of Cornish descent. They had at least seven children: Mary Ann (b 9 Jul 1837), Sarah (b. 1839; baptized 7 Jan 1840), Elizabeth (b 1841; baptized 20 Feb 1842); Caroline (b 1844), John (b 1845), William (b 1850); Alfred (1858); and, possibly, Catherine. They were all baptized at St Luke's Church in Norwood, London County, England.

        At the time of the 1851 English Census, John, Mary Ann, and their family were living at 34 High Street, Norwood, London County, England.

        After Mary's death, the family continued to live in Norwood.  At the time of the 1871 English Census, John was 56 years old, widowed, a gardener, and living at 1 Earl Street, Norwood, London County, England (Source: RG10/692; District: 6; Page: 27), with his son, Alfred (14), a gardener boy; a housekeeper, Elizabeth Goddard (45); and her three children: Henry (16), a brick maker; Elizabeth (11), scholar; and Sarah (9), scholar.

Robert Calf Penhaligon

BIRTH: 25 Apr 1819, St. Clement, Truro, Cornwall, England

BIOGRAPHY: 

        Robert married Prudence Hicks, of St. Ervan, Cornwall, England.

        At the time of the 1861 English Census, Robert was 42 years old, a farm laborer (b. St. Clement, Cornwall), and living at dwelling 10, St. Clement, Truro, Cornwall, England (Source: RG9/1557; District: 80; Folio: 80; Page: 13; GSU roll: 542831), with his wife, Prudence (39) (b. St. Ervan, Cornwall); his daughter, Mary J. (9), a scholar (b. St. Clement, Truro, Cornwall); his son, Thomas (6), a scholar (b. St. Clement, Truro, Cornwall); his son, Robert (3) (b. St. Clement, Truro, Cornwall); and his daughter, Elizabeth (5 months) (b. St. Clement, Truro, Cornwall). 

        At the time of the 1871 English Census, Robert was 52 years old, a gardener, and living on Boscawen Row, Truro, St. Mary, Cornwall, England (Source: RG10/2282; District 15; Folio: 47; Page: 23; GSU roll: 834887), with his wife, Prudence (49); his son, Robert (12), a butcher's errand boy; his daughter, Elizabeth A. (10), a scholar; his son, Richard (8), and his daughter, Grace (4).

        At the time of the 1881 English Census, Robert was 62 years old, a gardener, and living at 20 Boscawen Row, Truro, St Mary, Cornwall, England (Source: RG11/2311; District: 15b; Folio: 73; Page: 10; GSU roll: 1341555), with his wife, Prudence (60); his daughter, Grace (16); and his son, Richard (18), a painter.

DEATH: Robert died in Dec 1890, in Truro, Cornwall, England, at the age of 70.

 

John Carbis Penhaligon

BAPTISM: John was baptized on 25 Dec 1821, in St. Clement, Truro, Cornwall, England.

BIOGRAPHY: 

        John married Elizabeth Ann Randall on 3 May 1859, in Bodmin, Cornwall, England.

        At the time of the 1871 English Census, John was 47 years old (b Truro, Cornwall, England), a mariner, and living on Market Street, Falmouth, Cornwall, England (Source: RG10/2292; District: 2; Page: 3), with his wife, Elizabeth Ann (36) (b Wadebridge, Cornwall, England); his daughter, Elizabeth J. (11) (b Truro, Cornwall, England), a scholar; and his son John Charles (9) (b Truro, Cornwall, England), a scholar.

DEATH: 26 Jul 1898

 

Grace Penhaligon

BAPTISM: Grace was baptized on 3 Jun 1827, in St. Clement, Truro, Cornwall, England.

BIOGRAPHY: 

        Grace and her sisters, Mary and Kitty, moved from Cornwall to the Croydon/Norwood part of Surrey.  The area was packed with Cornish migrants and had been for many years.  In Surrey, the Penhaligon name became Pennaligon.

        Grace married John Coppin, on 4 Oct 1846, at St. John the Baptist Church, Croydon, Surrey.  John Ware, who married her sister Kitty, was a witness to the marriage.

        At the time of the 1871 English Census, Grace and John Coppin were living at Brickfield Cottage, Norwood Road, Streatham, London County, England (Source: RG10/719; District: 10; Page: 4).  John was a laborer in a brickyard.  Living with them were their daughter,  Emily (b 1857, Norwood), and their son, John (b 1865,  Streatham).  

        By the time Grace died in 1877, the family had apparently moved to Chelsea, where her death was recorded. 

        At the time of the 1881 English Census, Grace's daughter, Emily, was lodging with Alfred Toe, at Rosendale Road, in Streatham.  The Toe family was connected, by marriage, to the family of Grace's sister, Mary Penhaligon Meager.

DEATH: Grace died in the early months of 1877, in Chelsea, at the age of 49.
